We traveled to Manila in the Philippines recently to help one of our clients create a higher-performing, employee-focused culture.

Inspirational Speaker, Trainer, Author and Resultant (a consultant who gets results!)

 

As a professional speaker, I've been honored with many positive comments from audience members. Three of these comments have defined, shaped and continue to influence what I do from the speaking platform.

 

The first defining moment came early in my career as a motivational keynote speaker—a large association had invited me back to give a second keynote speech based on feedback from the previous year's conference. After my speech, an individual who had attended the previous year said to me, "Your speech last year changed my life!" She described what had resonated deeply with her, and when she applied the recommended techniques, her team became her division's top producers.

 

Why did her comment impact me so much? Well, until then, most of my work was in the training world, where the prevailing belief was the only effective way to make a message stick was to 'drill it into them' over long, drawn-out days of training. The speech that had 'changed her life' was only one hour long!

 

This taught me that people don't need lengthy interventions to make a difference in their lives. If a one-hour speech has a relevant message, inspirational stories and anecdotes, and easy-to-implement tools and techniques, people will be motivated to make the necessary life changes to strive (and reach) their personal best!

 

The second defining moment that significantly influenced me came after a speech to a thousand government and agency workers. An individual remarked, "That was the most interactive speech I've ever experienced!" The word 'interactive' surprised me; by definition, it would not describe a thousand people sitting in chairs while someone speaks to them from the platform!

 

After she described what had touched her, I asked how she felt I had 'interacted.' She said that for much of the speech, she felt she was the only one there, and that I had truly interacted with her mind and heart by creating word pictures that connected-the-dots, both personally and professionally.

 

The lesson for me was that although people want intellectual stimulation, unless you touch their hearts, nothing will change!

 

The third defining comment came from a senior executive of a large business after I delivered an inspirational keynote speech for his management team. In his closing remarks, he said, "Neil's strength is that he brings logic to soft skills!"

 

This was a validating moment for me. As a recovering engineer (my wife's words), it had been apparent to me that this nebulous thing called 'soft skills' was tough for people to grasp—they were finding the complexities of human behavior the most challenging aspect of life and work. I felt I needed to develop and hone a presentation style blending the emotional aspects of humor and stories within an analytical framework—to take life's simple truths and present them in a way that would engage people's minds.

 

This executive's strong endorsement made the effort worthwhile!

         
         
 

Although Neil will be pleased to travel from Arizona to the location of your meeting/event, he is aware that many meeting planners prefer to use a “local” speaker to save on travel expenses.
